If there's no rust to convert it just stays clear, so don't be disappointed if it's not all black. (If black converting primer is what you want, there are other products for that.)I have the best results when I knock off the heavy rust scale with a wire brush or sandpaper and wiping off the dust. I've gone through the trouble of taking steel down to shiny metal and spraying this primer, but it doesn't turn black, so it's a bit tricky to see if the part is fully covered or not. Save yourself the trouble of all that prep; just knock off the loose rust, spray this on, and watch the magic happen. The baseboards in the half bath and laundry room (opposite sides of the same wall) were rusted on the front covers. We were renovating the rooms and didn't want to replace the baseboards so a little online searching told me this product would not only cover up the rust we have and be paintable, but it would stop future rust from forming. It wasn't available locally in white so we ordered it online. It took awhile to arrive but I didn't need it immediately.We used a wire brush to get off as much rust as we could, wiped it down and then sprayed several coats of this. It looks great. I love that it is white b/c the baseboards are white and we wouldn't need as much paint to cover us a black or red primer. We could add another color of paint to this but they look nice enough and are in a small enough area that we aren't planning on going over it with additional paint. In the future, we may decide to do that just to get a glossier look, but for now, we're very happy with it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Recommend visiting Krylon website to understand 360 feature before using this product *by B***H on Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2015* Got two cans of this, not knowing coverage. Print was too small on can to read even with my glasses. Thought the 360 feature meant the spray would work with the can upside down (that's not what they meant). There's a little plastic piece inside the nozzle that I thought was a safety, so removed it. As I was spray painting an outside lamp post, paint was dripping onto my hand. Even so, was getting good painting results from about 2 feet away. The paint covered bare metal, plastic knobs, as well as painted surfaces quickly, with no drip marks. Only took 10 minutes to paint the lamp post (including light sanding before)...and 45 minutes to clean the paint off of my hand with mineral spirits. That night, I did an Internet search to find out more about how to use this product. There was a description of the 360 feature on the Krylon website. The next morning I painted the top portion of the post lamp using a new can with the 360 nozzle in the horizontal position. Got excellent results from about 2 feet away, with no drip marks. No paint got on my hands. Paint dried quickly.
