I purchased more rocks for the bottom since I wanted more than came with it, so the rocks cover what little water is visible in the bottom. The majority of the water is actually under the fountain in the base. Hope that makes sense. **Q: does it use electic plug to operate** A: It is a very nice fountain. Plugs into the wall, and small enough for a small table or office. The plug is attached to the fountain. **Q: The pump stopped working after 2nd use... what size is the pump it came with so I can pay to order a better one** A: I have found that the pump intake can get clogged up. I disassemble the fountain and remove the pump. In a sink with an electrical outlet nearby. I clean the pump intake with a tooth brush. Then I test the pump and vary the setting with the little slider switch. I select the maximum and note that for future reference. If the pump at this testing stage does not put out a goodly volume of water, I disassemble the pump and clean the parts and reassemble. Be careful of losing the parts down the drain. Also I clean the plastic tube that runs from the pump to the top cup. This is all I have ever had to do. The pump intake seems to accumulate a waxy substance from the fountain so I have to do the cleaning periodically. Write back for clarification if you have problems with this procedure. My fountain has been going strong for several years. My cat thinks that the fountain is his person drinking fountain. How well do these hold up?** A: I've had it for about five months. I do not run it continuously but a few hours per week. I have (don't judge) 17 fountains throughout my home and realized when doing maintenance yesterday that the Alpine fountains I have are the best quality. Every one I've purchased has a quiet pump and functions perfectly. I got one with a missing pump, cord, etc. but that was the way Amazon shipped it, obviously opened/used, and it still worked after Alpine supplied the missing parts. I've returned or tossed other brands that consistently have a very loud "buzz" when operating, but every Alpine is running smoothly after a year or so running constantly. About this particular Alpine fountain: It's pretty, it has some water flow sound but not overly so. I can see where the finish might fade with time, but after 7 months it's still intact. Love it, love the company! ### ⭐ Junk *by N***J on December 22, 2024* This is a junk product. Lowest quality materials. Pump either flows too much and shoots out of the bowl or it's a tiny trickle. I got the right flow, once. Even then the way the water flows there is no water sound. Bowl is cheap plastic. Pump is useless. And the upper part of the feature has a terrible paint job. It was out of the box 30 minutes. It's going back. Save your time and money.
