To answer your question the best would depend on the water supply quality and the level of contaminates required to be filtered. Under normal circumstances and usage we estimate from our continuing trials over the past 4 years that the average family of 4 will consume approximately 14 litres or 3.7 gallons per day over a period of 3 months (333 gallons) before maintaining the filters. It is recommended that Ceramic Dome Filter (now discoloured) be removed and cleaned Gently with a scouring pad to remove the dirt, silt, rust and other trapped particles. Detergent should Never be used to clean Any filters as this will clog the pores of the top filter rendering it useless. The other 2 filters can be rinsed and reinstalled. We recommend that the filter set should be replaced at 6 months however we have seen filter sets last 12 months, again depending on daily usage and municipal water quality. **Q: Does the entire top and bottom filter store how much water?** A: I believe it’s a round a gallon of water in the bottom holder the top doesn’t hold the water for long that is where you add water to be filtered. This filter works well and we use the water for plants and drinking. **Q: How much water does it hold?** A: The top portion can hold roughly a gallon of water at a time. **Q: can you dishwash the tanks?** A: Not dishwasher safe. We have an artesian well that we get our drinking water from, but I have noticed a bit of rust coloring around the pipes lately. I figured a little extra filtering would probably be beneficial. I bought this product because I wanted solution that didn't filter out all of the beneficial minerals that our bodies need. It does take a little while to filter (which is probably a GOOD thing), but once I got it completely full (overnight process) I only have to top it off occasionally. Its a great size for my family of 6 and the occasional visitor. The seller has been great, making sure that I received my filter in a timely manner, offering good tips regarding assembly and making sure all my questions are answered . I am glad that I chose this one over similar ones on the market, due to the outstanding customer service. ### ⭐ Horrible quality *by D***L on December 7, 2018* The containers do not have any form of water tight seal. As the water drains from the top container, it spills from the sides, so you lose about a quarter of your water as it is transferred into the lower container. The mineral stone filter arrived broken from its base. I thought that it would still serve its purpose without issues; however, the stone just floats to the top of the water not allowing for the water to filter properly.
