If their air roots get smothered with moist moss, they will rot. I used to use a lot of moss but learned the hard way to add a lot of porosity with bark, styrofoam, wooden balls, etc. They need moist air, not wet soil. I water my phals about once every 2 weeks when it is humid and once every 7 to 10 days when it is drier. Epiphyte orchids (air orchids) do not need potting medium. We only use it to keep the plants from falling over. Give them moist air and they will be happy. A good reference book is Orchid Care For the Beginner by Barbara Schmidt. Available on Amazon. I have 10 Phals and 2 Neostylus, 4 are blooming now and 2 are starting flower stalks and only one is new. All of the others I have owned for over a year and gotten them to re-bloom. It has wood chips and these clay balls that absorb water and release it slowly. Orchids live on trees in rain forests and do not require dirt. This medium consists of bark chips and stones with a little spaghnum moss. I repotted my little orchid into an orchid pot with many slits in it for air circulation and drainage. Then placed it in a bright window (no sun) and made sure it had about 12 hours of darkness every day. Within a few weeks it started growing new leaves, then some roots, and finally about a month ago, a stem with buds which are now open and gorgeous. So, in answer to your question, the medium is very good, allows roots to grow without too much water. Too much water will rot the roots and stem. More advice on YouTube. Hope this helps. **Q: Can I use this mix for Dendrobium, or it's only for Phalaenopsis?** A: They sell mixes just for dendrobiuns. This is formulated for phalaenopsis but would problem be ok. This is a great brand. And they also sell a soil that is for most orchids. I will be buying this again and have recommended it to friends. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Functional & Aesthetic *by S***T on August 10, 2024* Purchased both the Phalaenopsis Monterey Dark Imperial Orchid Potting Mix - (MINI Bag) & Phalaenopsis AAA Gold Imperial Orchid Mix (MINI Bag) by rePotme to upgrade my orchid to a larger pot with additional/ new potting materials but wasn't sure which would be best. The Dark Imperial had very little moss while the Gold Imperial was 65% moss. The pictures show the amount of potting materials I had left in each MINI Bag after repotting my orchid. You definitely get a lot of potting material per bag as I have enough left over for at least another orchid in a similar pot size or more. After watering my orchid with the new potting materials, I was able to confirm that the mixed material naturally created a lot of air/ space which ensures a functional mix of water retention within the moss and other material while allowing for quick and thorough drainage.
