Review: The best tub drain removal tool - The best tub drain installation and removal tool I've used. Works if the bottom of the drain is broken off or if it's intact. Works on cross threaded drains that are extremely tight. Lots of torque with the steel handle, you can even use a cheater bar (piece of steel pipe) for more torque although you run the risk of bending the tool's handle. The base of the handle is hex shaped so you can use a crescent wrench as an alternative to the handle. Fits many sizes as the tool can have the jaws flipped around to access the other sizes. Even if it doesn't fit perfectly (too small) you can manually spread the jaws until it makes contact with the inner surface of the drain. Once you make contact, it will bite, and the inner shaft will spin and apply pressure to hold the jaws in place. Sort of like a wedge effect. The harder you turn the handle, the farther the jaws will spread. If you are installing a drain, or replacing a drain that is not broken or corroded, the other, cheaper style works great. Usually has a hole going through it you can insert a screw driver into, to act as a handle. If it's corroded try jamming a screw driver or two down the drain and try to unscrew it that way. If it breaks, you have 3 options: use the cheaper "Drain Key" expanding wrench which doesn't bite well and is of overall cheaper construction, the Ridgid expanding wrench which in my opinion is the best tub drain tool ever conceived, or a few hundred dollars on a full set of internal pipe wrenches. If you just need to remove or install one tub drain, maybe have someone with some knowledge in the field help you with one of their tricks. If you plan to replace tub drains with any sort of frequency, buy this tool. It will quickly pay for itself in time saved, less busted knuckles, and money not deposited into the swear jar because Joe Shmoe cross threaded the drain when he installed it 5 years ago. The only flaw I see as using this tool for tub drains is that it might scratch the surface of the inner drain when installing. If this is an issue, wrap the jaws in a rag to protect the surface. Should still bite well enough to install it properly. This tool used to be sold at home depot for $60 some years ago. After searching retail stores, and Ridgid's own website for 6 months to find a replacement for the one I had stolen years ago, I found it on desertcart. I didn't like the new higher price, but seeing as demand is likely low it makes sense. Also it's the best option. If you want to cut down a tree, buy an axe. If you want to cut down a forest, buy a chainsaw.
Review: Awesome Tool! Money and Time Saver! - First let me say that I am a novice plumber and therefore I was apprehensive about spending $62.00 on a plumbing tool which I knew I would probably only use once in my life. The problem I had was my 3 rugrats broke the bath tub stopper off and cracked the cross piece in the bottom of the drain therefore the cheaper tool was not an option. I spend the better part of two weeks searching tool rental stores to try and rent this tool but no one had them in the Pittsburgh area. So I figured why not buy it, use it, and resell it. So I purchased the tool and within 10 minutes of opening it I had the old drain shoe out and the new one in. It was one of the easiest jobs I have ever done and the tool gets all the credit! This is a solid tool that is well built. I read all the reviews on similar devices and although allot were cheaper I went with the one with the best reviews. Buy it you wont be disappointed.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Greatest tool ever!
*by S***Y on June 7, 2013*

This tool saved hundreds (and possibly thousands) of dollars. We had just finished remodeling our bathroom, and our Roman tub's drain had been leaking for many years. Since we just replaced all the trim on the other faucets, I figured now was the time to replace that drain. It seemed easy enough to do - until I broke the cross hairs on the drain stop trying to remove it. I was stuck!!! I called the plumbing company and they told me that they'd either have to remove the tub, or cut through my first floor ceiling to remove the drain. The other option was to chisel out the drain, but the plumbing company would want me to sign a waver saying they weren't responsible for damaging the tub. I realized if the tub had to be replaced it could cost thousands. Any way I went it was going to be a lot of money and a mess. I bought this tool and voila! In 5 minutes I was able to unscrew the drain easily and replace it with a brand new drain. I strongly suggest that anyone in a similar circumstance purchase this tool. I'm not sure why every plumber doesn't own one of these. It's fantastic!
