By themselves they are not effective, but I also take a laxative when needed and maybe, just maybe, they soften enough to allow less strain. At least they can't hurt. :>) **Q: Is product vegetarian? Is the gelatin from an animal?** A: The container does not state that it is vegan but the ingredients appear to be mostly FD&C colors and the gelatin is only printed as such.
