I think it's a bit more adapted to my style of learning, but my class had pre-reqs of a bio class, so I had no trouble going through (and mostly skipping) the first few introductory chapters. What I did enjoy were the latter chapters that started to delve more into specific microbio topics. It wasn't overwhelmingly comprehensive (intro text), but was thorough enough that it provided a solid base to jump into more advanced topics. My professor also provided a lot of information from his clinical/lab work to supplement the text on several topics (mostly immunology/cytology/virology).
