Review: Love these! - These are one of my favorite colored pencils (tied with Holbein) 🥰. Excellent quality, a true soft core and dreamy colors. Holbein and Derwent Drawing are my favorites out of all the pencils I’ve tried because they have the least “dry” and least scratchy sensation when using. As a highly sensitive person in all the sensory ways, I’ve always hated colored pencils because of the scratchy noise and feeling, as well as the crayon-esque coverage/texture. I’ve been excited to find that some brands don’t have this issue, which has awakened a new mixed media lane for me ☺️ Here’s my breakdown of all the pencils I’ve tried: Holbein — high-end feel, a softer pencil (though not so soft you can’t apply pressure easily or control details), lays down smoothly with no scratchy sound or feeling, oily rather than dry feeling, really covers solidly with ease, shows up beautifully over watercolor & gouache. Lovely and wide color selection. Derwent Drawing — the softest pencil out there I’ve tried so far. The softness does make it a bit harder to control details unless you have a very sharp point. Also the thickest pencil I’ve tried with the biggest diameter color core — very pretty design & comfortable to hold. Really smooth and easy lay down, oily feeling rather than dry, dense pigment that shows up easily over watercolor & gouache. Very limited color palette but I personally ADORE all these particular colors for landscapes, botanicals & portraits. Prismacolor — a small step up in quality compared to Brutfuner, with most of the colors less dry feeing. Pigment load is much better though — on par with Holbein & shows up over watercolor & gouache. HUGE color selection and great price point, though not the most classy looking pencil out there — compared to the more expensive competition, these seem somewhat childish looking (to me, anyway). They are the narrowest pencil I’ve tried and not the most comfortable to hold but the color core diameter is equal to Holbein. Brutfuner Macaron Pastel set of 50 — a deliberate dupe of the Holbein set of pastels — very similar to Holbein & Prismacolor, though a bit more dry feeling, smaller color core diameter and less pigment load. Gorgeous colors that have dense pigment on white paper but don’t show up very well over black paper or watercolor/ gouache. A great set for the price. Faber Castell Polychromos — similar quality to Holbein, equal feeling when laying down to Brutfuner (more dry leaning but smooth and not scratchy), good pigment load & shows up well over watercolor and gouache. Luminance — a high-end feel soft pencil but definitely more “dry” almost chalky feeling when laying down. Shows up well over watercolor & gouache. A bit wider barrel than Holbein (about equal to Derwent Drawing) with an equal color core size. Lovely muted color selection but not the widest color palette available.
Review: Soft, rich, and perfect for earthy realism! - These Derwent Drawing pencils are a dream for anyone who loves natural, muted tones. The colors lean into the earthier side—lots of soft browns, greens, and greys—making them perfect for landscapes, animals, and anything with a realistic touch. The cores are buttery smooth and lay down pigment beautifully. They’re not as vibrant as traditional colored pencils, but that’s kind of the point—they’re meant for subtle, professional-looking shading and blending, and they do that incredibly well. They sharpen easily, and the tin keeps them nicely organized. Great for both beginners and pros who want to create warm, lifelike drawings. Highly recommend if you’re into wildlife, portraits, or outdoor scenes!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Every colored pencil artist should have some of these!
*by P***L on June 12, 2015*

I bought this 12 pencil set to replenish my dwindling supply of Derwent Drawing pencils, so this was not my first experience with the product. I have used them for several years- since Derwent first released them. I love them so much that I use them down to the tiniest nubs! Sometimes I even take the core out of the wood case and use it in a lead holder (Koh-I-Noor makes a good one for this). It is a chore t do this, but worth the time and effort because I do not have an art supply store within driving distance, and I have to order all of my higher quality supplies online. The earthy browns (chocolate, sanguine, sepia red, ruby earth) are quite rich, while the black and white are the most opaque of all of the colored pencils I have ever used. This was the first time I have tried the blues and greens in this line. The 12 piece set has the following colors: Ink Blue, which is a warmer, muted dark blue; Soloway blue, pale grayish blue which is perfect for clouds and eye sclera; Olive Earth- the name describes the color perfectly Green Shadow- a pale grayish green, which has more applications for nature drawing than I expected! Brown Ochre- a light golden brown- this color is more like the yellow ochre in other pencils in my opinion Yellow Ochre- a buttery mellow yellow- brighter and less "ochrey" that most yellow ochre shades, which tend to be more brown or gray Sanguine- a terracotta red-orange; I have older pencils from this line, one of which is named terracotta, and I cannot tell the swatches apart Sepia (red)- darker than Sanguine but in the same color family Ruby Earth- the closest approximation I can think of is madder brown- this is a cooler reddish brown than sepia or sanguine Chocolate- another self explanatory color Ivory black- dense, velvety black Chinese white- even softer and creamier than Prismacolor white; It will not blot out colors underneath, but it is one of the best white colored pencils on the market (my opinion) As others have already stated, many of the shades are muted, but not weak. Earthy tones are very rich, and they layer and blend quite well with other colored pencils. I use them along with oil and wax types including Derwent Artist and Studio colored pencils, Derwent watercolor and Inktense pencils; Koh-i-Noor Nero and Progresso lines, Primacolor Premier, and Faber Castel Polychromos. I only wish I had bought a larger set because now I want to try all of the colors!
