The color is much lighter and not saturated like the picture, and it's definitely not hard sided, it pushed in easily. Also, you can tell from the pic if you look closely enough, but I guess I didn't, because I didn't realize until it came that when you open the case it's split in two, rather than opening at the top like a traditional soft-sided suitcase does. Because of this, you have to stack all of your clothes and stuff twice as high as the sides, and I suspect when TSA opens it to inspect it (or just when you open it after rolling it around and things shifting), everything will spill out. I wouldn't think TSA is likely to carefully re-stack it all either. I could always spot my bad coming down the baggage chute in less than a minute. I took this set all the way from the US to Africa and trekked across a few different African countries I probably was on 8 or more planes within just a few weeks and this luggage stood the test. It’s very durable even with all the rough handling of my bags I didn’t see any cracks on the outside or tears on the fabric from my constant over packing. This bag looks unique enough to stand out but not so expensive that It makes you look like a target to thieves which is a great contrast. The color is slightly darker than the pic and thankfully not super glossy but still has a gleam to it. The sides mash in easily, so it is not HARD, but seems durable. The odor is stifling! It smells like diesel fuel, oil, formaldehyde and ammonia mixed together. I've researched and it seems most plastic luggage all reeks of this smell. I had 5 days before my trip. I've sprayed half a bottle of Victoria's Secret body spray and used a whole box of dryer sheets to try to eliminate this stench. I also kept the set in a separate bedroom with the ceiling fan on. I've packed with several dryer sheets under the zipped liners also, so hopefully I won't smell like an oil rig worker during business meetings.
