Personally, I use the elastic a few times before tossing. These are a godsend. I do stretch them a bit before using as they are otherwise quite tough to stretch and tie around the hair. When removing on occasion it has pulled a strand here and there but it depends on how I've styled the hair it doesn't hurt so it could be a straggler hair that was due to fall off.
