The product does the job of protecting the iPad (screen) from the normal level of knocks and abrasion that occurs when carrying it in a bag with other equipment and papers, additionally the case is non-slip so it can be carried like a book. The pen holder placement whilst looking questionable, is sufficient to keep the pen in place - ie. I've not had my pen accidentally fall out. It is sufficiently stable to deliver on the stand functions, including portrait mode - although a little care is needed to ensure the base is flat on the worktop to give full stability.
