I know I don't, and therefore I use a grow light above for a few hours a day. It works like a charm for me. And I don't have to think about how much or how little water I need to put in.I love this thing.FYI: when I received it it looked dirty, I thought it had been used. I contacted the manufacturer and they explained that because of the way it's packed, some of the soil gets everywhere and it's normal.
