## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can one cup of rice be cooked instead of five cups?**
A: Yes. I do it everyday. Just use 1 and half cup of water ( use the same cup for rice). Remember to leave the cooked rice in the pot for 10 minutes after you unplug. It helps to moisten the thick crust at the bottom.

**Q: Is "5 cups" the capacity stated in terms of cooked or uncooked rice? Previous answers are conflicting. Thanks.**
A: This is the uncooked rice measurement (1 cup of uncooked rice = 6 oz). 5 cups of uncooked rice will yield up to 10 cups cooked rice.

**Q: IS THE LID DETACHABLE FOR CLEANING ?**
A: No

**Q: Does this have a steel inner lid like the 7 cup version?**
A: Yes indeed. It is also made of stainless steel.

Rice cooker leaks from the lid.

Lid does not seal properly hence does not cook properly.

    Very nice rice cooker

I purchased this because I was worried about non stick surfaces getting into my food, and the majority of rice cookers use a non stick insert. So I was thrilled to find one that was all stainless. I've only used it a few times, but it works great. Some folks complain about rice cookers, that they burn the bottom, and most do, but not burn, just a nice brown crust, which in some countries is considered a delicacy (Korea for one). I love to mix in the browned bottom with the rest, or if you don't want that part, spoon out the fluffy cooked rice and just soak the pot to clean easily. The only down side to this product is the handle and steamer. The separate steamer should have some sort of handle, as it's impossible to take it out from the main pot if you want to remove it before the rice has finished...some sort of collapsible metal handle would be great for the steamer. Also the 5 cup rice cooker has a different handle to the machine than the larger ones--is's just an integrated handle that you slip your hand into to open the top...which would be fine except that it's located sort of near the steam escape, so you have to be pretty careful when opening the lid. But really both can be dealt with--the machine seems to be well built and works well so I'm happy with it so far.

    a little fiddly, works great

if you're used to an american style rice cooker, this has a lot more moving parts and things to wash. but on the other hand i think it's kind of worth it because it is so much cooler than the cheapo kind that we had before. and when i say cooler, i mean functionality (although it also looks cooler but that's not my priority).let's see...- it can keep rice warm for 24 hours without drying out (i haven't used this but it seems a nice idea).- it has the stainless steel pan so you don't have to worry about toxins from the nonstick surfaces. and nothing sticks to the stainless steel pan at least if you use it right.- it has the stainless steel steamer so you don't have to worry about toxins from plastic.- it has a little plastic thingy to catch the extra water that comes out.OK so with all those parts, plus the inside of the lid is a separate piece that you have to at least rinse and then remember to put back... it's a little fiddly compared to the simple ones you'd get at your big box stores. BUT, it's really nice and i think it cooks the rice nicer than the old simple one we got rid of. so i say it's a pretty unconditional recommendation.the only thing would be if it stops working after a while or something. if that happens i will change my review later, or add to it.PS: when you get the manual and try to read it, it's a little intimidating. it's actually not harder to use than the simple ones, as long as you remember to put all the parts in it (the lid thing and the water catcher thing).[ETA] PS2: i should mention, having had this cooker for quite a while now... still liking it. just wanted to mention there's some rules that you can bend and others that you can't. in order for this rice cooker to work well, **never overload** it too much. i thought i had burnt it out the one time i did that, but afterwards i've only put reasonable amounts of rice/vegs in it and no problems.also it's better if you put more water than it asks for, because when you leave it warming for hours it can get dried out. you can experiment with this like with any ricecooker.
