Also, recommending not using a pencil sharpener was unnecessary in my experience -- I use my electric sharpener with no problems whatsoever. **Q: Does this set say what hardness the pencils are, such as, hb, 2b, 4b, 6b, 8b, 9b? or are they only listed on the pencils as soft, med & hard?**
A: They are listed as Hard, Medium, Soft and S.Soft on the pencils. If you have a heavier hand with charcoal, this set is good to get lighter values. The super soft is comparable to a Medium Faber Castell Pitt Charcoal pencil or a HB General's charcoal pencil, soft is like a General's 2B medium pencil. The medium is lighter than a hard HB General's charcoal pencil, while the hard is very hard, almost like a dark gray. They produce a matte finish with a good range of values.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Writes okay on walnut - for the wood workers out there

I bought these to be able to write on walnut which is a darker brown wood. It works but it's not really the right tool for the job if this helps anyone. The charcoal is soft and breaks easily so a fine line to mark a cut is a challenge. However, this however is MUCH better than using pencil though and they did not cost too much.
