The clear plastic piece sticking out of the top of the detector is what's used to report laser and it requires line of sight or a very strong bounce to accurately detect. I haven't seen it tested explicitly, but the location where you mount the R8 will greatly affect the laser reporting. Too low or too high on the windshield might drastically drop the sensor's rear visibility.
