Review: Grade A as always! - Cold Steel was founded in 1980 by Lynn Thompson. For the next 40 years he did his best to provide consumers with the best knife possible for their money. Cold Steel knives are renowned for their quality and durability. Lynn and crew used to sell CDs showing the crazy stuff they did to and with their knives. I have hundreds of knives, some of which are incredibly expensive but without hesitation, when choosing a knife to use in a situation where my wellbeing or that of someone else depends on my knife I would grab a Cold Steel knife. This particular knife would be my choice if I had to defend myself. This knife is very Ka-Bar like but an improvement in every way. It has my favorite grip. If you squeeze hard enough this grip almost hurts. Between the shape and texture slippage is pretty unlikely. The blade is D2, a tool Steel used in knives since 1965. This steel is better in every way (except ease of sharpening) than the 1095 Steel used by Ka-Bar. Since D2 has much better edge retention you won't have to sharpen as often though. The finger guard is thicker and stronger than most Ka-Bar type knives. I have every version of the full sized Leatherneck because I like them so much. I'm hoping Cold Steel comes out with more handle colors, or maybe more alloy choices. A Lynn Thompson signature version in S35VN would be awesome. I'll have to check the Cold Steel website, maybe they have already! The Leatherneck sheath is top notch as well. I think the Cold Steel Kydex sheaths are typically the best in class, even better than Ka-Bar's. On top of all this Leatherneck is usually about half of what a Ka-Bar cost. They also go on sale on desertcart frequently. I have paid as litte as $25 for one. My oldest Leatherneck looks the same as my newest one. It's a rugged beast and there is no noticeable wear or damage after years of use. I own hundreds of knives of which about 30% are Cold Steel. As with every Cold Steel I own this knife gets the grumpy old guy seal of approval!
Review: Fantastic Knife - Cold Steel has another winner with this one. I am a bit biased, I am a Cold Steel fan after all, but I give a fair shake to every product I get whether it be knife, guitar, or gun :) So let's get into it: Pros: -It is a time-tested design (after the Ka-Bar) with an improvement in strength. Instead of having a rat-tail tang, it is full tang. Added strength over a kabar. It also has a thicker guard, which I think is more preference. -Along with what I just stated, the blade is a tank. It is a solid thickness, in D2 steel, and especially with the tanto point, you would be hard pressed to break this blade. -It has a fair amount of belly, especially for a tanto blade. Good for slicing -It is ridiculously comfortable in the hand. Glad they didn't go too classic with the leather stacking (which I still love on a classic blade). But this is a handle that isn't going to wear out like the Cold Steel SRK, the texturing may wear a tiny bit, but overall the solid rubber I think will last forever (you can always had some athletic tape as well). -Value. Plain and simple. A giant hunk of D2, a Secure-Ex Sheath, and well designed for $60? This isn't Sk5 or Aus 8 or 4116. This is a high quality steel. It is TOTALLY worth it. Cons: -The Sheath... Okay listen, I know I just added that as a tenant of the "Pros", and I am usually a huge fan of the Secure-Ex Sheaths, but this one lacked retention. It there is a ton of rattle, and it doesn't retain the blade nearly as securely as I think it should. This can be mitigated, and I'll also be buying a leather sheath just to have one, but still, come one Cold Steel, give us proper retention! Overall, even with the sheath issues, I think that this is a home run for Cold Steel. VASTLY superior to the version in SK5 or 4116. It is a fighting knife but I have used it for everything from making kindly to batoning and it works like a charm. Great overall utility/fighting knife. Grab one, and mod it like I did. For those of you interested. I cut off the top guard, and sanded down the black coat to make this look so wicked. Thanks!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Anyone know how well this blade cuts through material? As in how practical is this?**
A: It is D2 so pretty tough for handling most materials, D2 is known to chip under certain circumstances though, especially if it hits another metal. S35vn is called a "super steel" for its edge retention and it cuts like crazy but can shatter under stress because it is so hard(high rockwell) it becomes brittle, but if it is too soft then it is pretty useless for knives also (throwing knives are generally softer so they don't shatter). D2 is a good steel so this blade should cut as well as you can sharpen it. Practical though? Probably not practical, it looks beyond question like a fighting knife and an almost over the top one at that, and it is heavy to wear all day on your person if you are always active doing things, here in Texas you can wear a sword if you want to and walk around, the only illegal knife to carry here is a brass knuckle hybrid knife, and idk why because you can have knuckles or a dagger but can't combine their powers as one.. Anyways, I'm glad I own this knife as a solid backup and the quality seems impressive but I do choose to carry other knives I have over carrying the leatherneck tanto EDC.

**Q: Is this Full Tang?**
A: Yes.

**Q: Is the blade hollow ground?**
A: It has a sabre grind.

**Q: Is the handle leather or plastic?**
A: U won't be disappointed with this Product.....handle is Steele .

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best knives I’ve owned
*by J***O on December 28, 2025*

I’ve had this knife before and bought it again because it’s that good. The Cold Steel Leatherneck Tanto is razor sharp out of the box and holds an edge really well. D2 steel does a great job — doesn’t need constant sharpening. Solid, well-balanced, and built to last. Easily one of the best knives I’ve ever owned. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
