It holds a lot of water and the float mechanism does work well to prevent spill. However, after a few weeks, my Pekingese has refused point blank to use it, though he did find it relatively easy initially and seemed to get a whole lot less water down his "beard" and on the floor. It may be that once the level of water reduces, his very flat face doesn't fit into the bowl to allow him to drink - a common issue with all flat-faced breeds. My own Peke prefers a flatter style of water dish [like a plant saucer or similar] or one of the angled dishes . It must be said that my own Pekingese is extremely fussy and can be fickle too.
