Were these absolutely necessary? no. But it did make for looking somewhat fashionable and actually was convenient in its own way. Having the zipper is very nice and makes it super easy to put on and take off while having skates on, plus I was able to put the laces of my skates underneath it so they were out of my way and just looked cleaner. while skating it felt very comfortable and not in anyway annoying, the zipper didn't pock me or anything which was nice.
