Bright and attention-getting, but not headache-inducing. It works from a nearby room. The remote does NOT have to be pointed at it. I was worried that you'd have to be in the same room like many infrared TV remotes. That would completely defeat the purpose for me. And I was pleased to find out that is not the case. So this must be an RF remote, not IR, which is what you would want in this case. The lighted sign is just the right size. I haven't tried it with batteries because that also seems to defeat the purpose. You can plug it into an old USB wall wart, which is nice. I have some of those that I don't use for my phone anymore because they're so slow. But they work fine for this!
