Also would a 2x2 work for this? The instructions are a bit vague.** A: The length of the cauls will depend on how wide of a panel you're clamping. I made mine 24" as that will accommodate most of the work I do. I can make longer ones if I make something bigger, like a table-top. As for the 1 5/8", I did originally make the cauls 2x2. Turns out 1 5/8 is the thickness you want if you want to be able to clamp thick stock. And anything thinner will not accommodate the screws. So 1 5/8 it is! **Q: I would like to purchase more of the notched plastic rails, so I can make varying length cauls. Where can I find them?** A: I routed 5/8” diameter slots into the boards I use. I don’t use the plastic slot holders. If you are using 2x4 use 2x6. Instead. Mine are actual # shaped so I can clamp all six directions. But be warned that the top and bottom bend if you overtighten **Q: What is the largest size "wooden bar" will it accept? Will they take an actual 2"x2" board?** A: A 2x4 is not 2" by 4". The width which will fit through the clamps is 1.75". The maximum height of the wood would be approximately 5 3/8". But they are freaking awesome ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Useful tool, but there's a learning curve *by M***. on April 30, 2021* I'm waffling between 4 and 5 stars here. These clamps work as designed, are high quality and heavy cast iron and seem like they are made to last. That being said, there's a learning curve to using them effectively. I suggest practicing with them during a dry fitting of your project before adding in glue, otherwise you're likely to make a real mess. Okay let's back up a second. The first thing you need to do is mill 4 lengths of wood to use as the crossbars for these clamps. The instructions are perfectly fine (despite a reviewer here complaining about them), but you need to know how big to make them. I bought these for use making cutting boards that will be no more than 13" wide, so I made them 24". You should also own a jointer to get a good milled edge on the crossbars, so that might be a small challenge if you don't own one. Regarding the learning curve, you need to play around a bit to figure out where the clamps should be positioned on the grooved plastic thingies so that there is enough room to get your glued pieces into place and to give you the right amount of space for clamping. While I have not yet made a cutting board with these, I did use them to glue up a 13' long countertop using various lengths of board that were around 3" wide. I placed the bottom crossbar of the clamps underneath the dry piece, positioned correctly by dry fitting everything first, then glued up my 2nd piece and slid it into place under the top of the clamps. Then, I put the top cross bar into place and clamped them down. From that point on it was easy to put other clamps into place as needed. So, overall, I do think these are very helpful.
