## Description

A career-spanning, cross-label anthology featuring 23 essential recordings from 1971-2020 for the first time on one album. Diamonds & Rhinestones: The Greatest Hits Collection inclues liner notes penned by Robert K. Oermann, who collaborated with Dolly on her 2020 autobiography, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. Gems on Diamonds & Rhinestones include Dolly's performances with Kenny Rogers ("Islands in the Stream" and "Real Love"), Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette ("Silver Threads and Golden Needles" from Honky Tonk Angels) and "Faith," her delightfully surprising 2020 collaboration with the Swedish electropop dance duo Galantis (featuring Mr. Probz).

Review: An Eccentric Collection of Wonderful Dolly Songs - I adore Dolly Parton and like or love every track on this greatest hits collection. Dolly has to be about the most industrious musician ever and has been writing and recording her grooving, heartbreaking music for over fifty years (to say nothing of her other business and philanthropic ventures). She has enough radio hits and essential album cuts that Legacy could pump out a few sequels to this collection and still hardly scratch the surface. So for the quality of the music, I give 'Diamonds and Rhinestones' an easy five stars. BUT! As a longtime Dolly fan (and a bit of a fussbudget), I have to confess that certain aspects of this new collection perplex me. First, it presents a seriously lopsided view of Dolly's career, favoring her 1970s & 1980s hit-making years with RCA, skipping most of her work in the 1990s and early 2000s, and then picking up again in 2008 (after she formed her own Dolly Records label). I get that collecting tracks across multiple labels gets complicated and probably expensive, but a truly representative compilation would not entirely ignore the singer's formative 1960s years or her critically celebrated roots albums on the Sugar Hill label. Personally, I would lose "Baby I'm Burning" and the second Kenny Rogers duet to make room for "Dumb Blonde," "Just Because I'm a Woman," a Porter Wagoner duet, the Grammy-winning "Shine," or the Oscar-nominated "Travelin' Thru." (See what I mean about Dolly having so many great songs for a collection like this to draw on?) Second, who put the tracks in this order?! "9 to 5," "Jolene," "Here You Come Again," "Islands in the Stream," and "I Will Always Love You," probably come first because they are Dolly's biggest and most iconic songs, and "Faith" makes sense as a closer because it is the newest song and sounds nothing like the others. But in between these bookends the organization of the collection feels haphazard, with recent songs like "Red Shoes" (2018) sandwiched by much older songs like "Heartbreaker" (1978) and "The Seeker" (1975). Country and popular music has changed so much in fifty years, and so has Dolly's voice, and jumping back and forth between original recordings spanning those fifty years only accentuates the changes and creates a disorienting listening experience. (You will be spared this annoyance if you buy Legacy's 2005 compilation, 'The Essential Dolly Parton,' which puts the tracks in chronological order). Returning to my first point, though: I am a big Dolly fan and a bit extra about it, so I bought two copies of 'Diamonds & Rhinestones' despite my quibbles over the selection and ordering of the songs. I ordered the CD from desertcart, and it was lovingly dropped onto my porch the day the album was released, as desertcart promised. But I bought the vinyl from Wal-Mart because they are selling it in an exclusive hot pink version. Happy listening!
Review: Happy camper - Love the cd
