Make sure you are applying the iron to the wick, not the item to be soldered. Use the iron to depress the wick on to the workpiece.2. This wick is pre-treated, but you can apply a light coat of flux to the wick if yours is old or otherwise dried out.3. This is an especially tight braid. I find it helpful to splay the ends of the wick a bit just to loosen it up. This seems to get the capillary action going quicker.4. If the solder isn't coming off as clean as you would like, you can try applying more solder, which will give the solder more momentum and might be the extra push you need.5. You might want to wear an agile glove, like Mechanix, since the wick gets very hot within several inches of the tip.
