Had to do that once, and they stopped me from a very slow attempt to get out of a gnarly solo winter hike - if you do something stupid like go up to 3500m in a tshirt without gloves, they let you confidently run down a snowy mountain to avoid frostbite :D Overall, in my opinion there's not too much room where these are necessary but you wouldn't pack crampons.
