Review: One of my favourite movies of 2017 - I grew up with and loved the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show and despite initial reservations at the promotional material, I really enjoyed this movie as it does a great job at honouring the original show while updating it as a more mature reimagining and in this regard, I feel it did a much better job than the Transformers franchise. One of the few superhero movies with teenagers as the main characters, Power Rangers does a good job of laying the framework and establishing the characters and lore for a potential new franchise. The highlight for me is the evolution of the main characters over the course of the movie, they feel genuine and the actors do a great job of bringing these reimagined iterations to life, including the first autistic and gay superheroes in a theatrical superhero movie, yet these traits don't feel forced or thrown in for no reason. My main criticism about this movie is the excessive product placement and compared to other superhero movies, there's not much action since the focus of the movie revolves around character development. As a result, the third act of the movie feels rushed but when the iconic suits finally appear, it feels like they've been earned and this makes it feel more believable and a more powerful moment. That being said, there are some aspects of this movie that make it unsuitable for younger audiences who enjoy the current TV shows, such as occasional swearing, implied violence, mature humour and references to cyber bullying. The score and effects of this movie are great, particularly when the Rangers morph for the first time and the bonus features are enjoyable, featuring audio commentary, outtakes, deleted and extended scenes, and production videos showcasing the casting, development of the Ranger suits, CGI, stunts and martial arts training. This is one of my favourite movies of 2017 and I'd like to see a sequel made. If you like superhero movies or enjoyed the original Power Rangers as a kid, then you should give this a look. Review: Reliving my Childhood.. - With Power Rangers being a firm favourite of my childhood along with Teenage Mutant Ninja (Hero) Turtles, Transformers and many other TV shows, I was a little excited about the idea of a modern Rangers film but obviously a little sceptical about what they would do to my 'heroes' I grew up with (Bay's Transformers, hey we can't like them all). But going in with the right attitude of just wanting a couple of hours of silly fun, I got everything I wanted from this movie, the right amount of fun, corniness and action with a much needed modern twist and also welcomed throwbacks to the original. It has a good origins story with a few heart warming moments and making them more superhero like was a great touch also the soundtrack really pumps you up during the film. This was definitely going to be a day one Blu-ray purchase for me because I really think it deserves a sequel, there's so much more story to tell. Overall I throughly recommend this film for people all ages, from grown ups reliving childhoods to children beginning the Power Ranger journey. 4.9 out of 5 from me.. it's Morphin Time... Good ending but a bit slow in places. I was surprised it was so long when I got it via Love fIlm by post. It in my opinion should have been atleast 30 minutes shorter which would have made it a bit more fast paced.
