The jSax has a traditional fingering system and serves to enable newcomers to develop embouchure and tuning skills which will be directly transferable to a full size saxophone. The tone is surprisingly mellow, and therefore this instrument offers a lot of fun for both newcomers and established amateur saxophonists. Following in the tradition established with other Nuvo instruments, the jSax is pitched in C (concert pitch). This makes integration into classroom music making very easy, and means that the jSax is also compatible with all WindStars music. The instrument has a fully chromatic range from middle C (C4) to G in the next octave up (G5). Due to its design and construction, the jSax requires very little maintenance and is simple to clean - warm soapy water will do the trick in next to no time! Since the pads are synthetic, there is no risk of water damage, simply allow the instrument to drip dry before returning to its case. You can take your jSax with you wherever you go, they love camping, hiking, climbing and even swimming! The jSax outfit is supplied with two synthetic reeds, strengths 1.5 and 2 which are great for getting started. For an older child or person probbaly go with an Alto sax. For a young child just starting it woudl be a good tool to start with **Q: What is the difference between the nuvo instrumental n510jbbk black jsax and the newer nuvo jsax 2.0?** A: It's my understanding that the only difference is in the mouthpiece design. Some minor tweaks have been made to the ligature of the mouthpiece. I stand to be corrected on this subject though. I have played and studied my own example (of the earlier issue), and permanently switched to playing it with the straight bell option. I made a number of modifications to my own Jsax to improve the range and correct several ridiculous fingering issues, and have not gone any further than this. I also experimented with an alternative cor anglais-shaped bell to try and correct the less-than-pleasant tone of the instrument, which has a bit of a "rubber-chicken" character to it. I did intend to use Jsax as a novel alternative to my straight soprano sax at gigs, but have abandoned that idea. **Q: How is this one different to the orange one (https://www.amazon.co.uk/nuvo-jsax-orange-black-alto-saxophone/dp/b01lz9afg6) thanks.** A: It is no different. The design and playability is the same. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars *by A***R on 11 November 2017* Really neat design! The sax itself sounds great, and very "saxy". Not what you'd initially expect given it's plastic. Very low tones are a bit harder to sound (and the instrument is indeed shorter and smaller than your run-of-the-mill alto sax), but that might also just be a case of the craftsman blaming the tool.Each part is made of good quality synthetic plastic, and can be detached and cleaned, and everything fits neatly and tightly into its spot in the hard shell case. I can then shove the whole thing into my backpack and off I go.Given that this is not only less expensive, but actually more convenient to use and transport than a regular sax, I'd consider this extremely good value. ### ⭐⭐ Shortcomings in compass and intonation *by B***N on 12 February 2019* This instrument is shorter than a soprano sax and so of slightly higher pitch, being somewhere between a soprano and sopranino in size and pitch. Unfortunately, it's mainly let down by a small compass - just one and a half octaves. The intonation is sadly, pretty poor. I've managed to tweak it a little and can now get it to reach G Sharp, by slightly enlarging the thumbhole. Maybe more enlargement could let us get the compass up to two full octaves. Some of those intonation problems can also possibly be solved by adjustment of the hole size or pad height.
