Yes, the trays lay down flat inside side by side and on top of the puzzle that is being worked on. When you shut the lid and zip it up, the top quality cushioning traps everything just the way you left it. Of course, you have to be sure of which side you open the case from and it has to be on a flat surface. That took one error to learn. We do still have it although I can't remember exactly which puzzle is in progress.
