I use a 10-litre plastic container/bucket that originally contained protein powder (see photo). Not all plastic containers can be re-used in this fashion, and before you re-use any plastic container for food/drink, it's a good idea to check the "plastic number" in the triangular recycling symbol on the container (see photo). If it's a 1, 2, 4 or 5 the container should be safe for food. Plastic containers labelled 3, 6 or 7 are not safe. My onions always turn out great with my setup, and the whole family loves them. So delicious and healthy! The thing does exactly what it was supposed to do (keep the oxygen away from my onions), and I have no complaints whatsoever. Great product, great price and fast shipping. I don't have one to hand but I'd estimate about 10mm in diameter. If you have a solid rubber bung, you'd be able to drill it to suit. **Q: what do airlocks achieve?** A: Airlocks allow the carbon dioxide created as a byproduct of fermentation to escape from the fermentation vessel, without allowing the air from the outside to enter the vessel, spoiling the product. The airlocks are filled with water and the pressure inside the vessel is great than outside as the Co2 is created and this bubbles through the water to escape. **Q: Hi if i shape the bung to fit can these be used with a 25 ltr bucket?** A: Hi Yes this is what i do for the initial fermentation **Q: Are these to fit demijohns?** A: The bungs that are supplied with the airlocks will fit into 1 gallon glass demijohns. Bungs are complaint and grip okay. Traditional design may not be as easy to clean as some other designs.
