Mine has arrived unsealed and contents are a brownish colour with sponge applicator on top?** A: That's what it is. Sponge on top with the paste underneath. **Q: Will this help remove small scratches in a silver ring?** A: No. But it will make them less noticeable. **Q: Can ii also be used on silver plates pieces? Is it not too abrasive?** A: It is perfect to use on silver plate. It is not abrasive, but do use the sponge provided. I used it on my silver jewellery and it was very effective. However, the jewellery became dark again after sitting in the jewellery box for a while. The cleaning process itself was quite easy. There's a sponge in the jar which you wet a bit and apply the paste on your silver. There's some unpleasant chemical smell so it's better to work near an open window or outside. Also I advice to use gloves.
