## Description

The IOCrest SI-PEX40064 4 port SATA III PCI-e 2.0 x1 controller card Marvell 88SE9235 chipset adds four SATA III ports to a computer through a PCI-e 2.0 x1 slot, delivering multiple internal 6Gbps connections for SATA III hard drives and SSDs. With full support for SATA 3.0 hard drives and data transfer speeds of up to 6 Gbps, the controller card features a native PCI Express single chipset that provides enhanced compatibility, reliability and performance for SATA 600 MB/s storage needs.

Review: AFFORDABLE ADDITIONAL SATA PORT SOLUTION - Ok, just so that everyone is clear, this card does NOT support RAID or HyperDuo!! What this card does, and does very well, is to add an additional four internal SATA ports to your system via the PCIe slot, which is perfect if you have an older motherboard, like mine, and need additional SATA ports, but don't have the money to buy a new board, or simply have no reason to change your existing motherboard. The card come supplied with two SATA cables, which by my guess are 45cm in length, the driver CD and a low profile backing plate. It turned out I didn't need the driver CD, because after inserting the card, connecting my drives and powering the system back up again, Windows installed the needed drivers perfectly and my attached drives appeared straight away. If you're after a quick and affordable solution to add additional SATA ports to your system, this is it. But once again, this card does NOT do RAID or HyperDuo...
Review: I could not believe the speed increase I got on my old system! - If you have to keep your somewhat older PC with older SATA protocol, get this and change your drive with an SSD. You will be amazed. Even if you use a mechanical HDD you will get an instant double speed (6Gbps compared to 3Gbps of the older protocol). What is worth noticing is that it can be used with the standard windows drivers, meaning you can clone your older driver straight to this one and it will boot right away. Of course you can install the specific drivers which are compatible with all windows up to 8.1 64bit so far. Some warning, this is a special type of SATA controller -that is why is somewhat expensive. It uses 2 PCI-e channels attaching 2 disks per channel (it has 4 ports). The hyperDuo function allows the combination of SSD and HDD to act like one super fast, high capacity drive. The SSD stores the most used stuff while the rest of the data are piped to the HDD which in general has a bigger capacity. It also offers disk encryption at hardware lever (I did not test this). If you do not need these functions e.g. you have one only drive, then a simpler (i.e. cheaper) solution will also give you the double transfer speed.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: sorry for the newb question, but how do you connect this to the computer? do I need anything else to connect it?
Thanks!**
A: No worries just ensure that you motherboard has the correct port PCI-e x1 (desktops only, diagram here: http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2013/04/mb.jpg), then you simply slot the card into the port, it comes with a couple of SATA data connection cables so you only need to make sure your PSU has sata power connectors available depending on the number of drives you wish to connect (they look like this: http://sharpsblogorama.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/sata-hard-drive-power-cable-connector.jpg) .Hope this answers your question, let me know if you have any further queries or are stuck.

**Q: Is there a HD size limit with this?**
A: I don't believe there's any limit. I have drives 2-14 TB connected to these cards across multiple PCs and they all worked flawlessly.

**Q: so if I put this into a x16 PCIE 1.0 port and hooked an SSD to it, what would be my max bandwidth to the SSD?**
A: Hello, well, the maximum bandwith provided by the PCI-E x16 gen 1.0 standard port; it is greater than the PCI-E x1 gen 1.0, and not having now many specifications on these standards on Wikipedia.org I have found about that for x1 slot the bandwith is 2.5 GB/s (250 MB/s) and for x16 slot it is 8 GB/s (? MB/s). I hope this is enough. Greetings,Massimo.

**Q: Hi, Does this card support Raid and strip volume?**
A: Seems like a simple question, with a bunch of conflicting answers. The problem is Amazon groups several IO Crest SATA controller cards into one listing and the questions and answers are common across several models. First, it should be clarified that there is hardware RAID and there is software RAID, and if software RAID is what you are after your OS will provide that regardless of your disk controller -- but software RAID doesn't match the performance of hardware RAID. None of the IO Crest cards that are based on the ASMedia chipsets support hardware RAID. The Marvell 88SE9215 does not support hardware RAID. Marvell 88SE9230 support hardware RAID 0 and 1. Marvell 88SE9705 supports hardware RAID 0 and 1 and also HyperDuo. What is HyperDuo? It is like RAID 0 but you mix (hybrid) SATA HDDs and SSDs in the array, and the controller card manages the array to swap the most recently used items onto the SSD storage. This allows you to get the best of both worlds -- the read speed of SSD but the mega storage you get with regular hard drives. Since very little of what is on your array is used on a frequent basis, it can really result in performance gains. But please don't spend $100 on a card that can do HyperDuo without researching it further because there are some potential downsides. For the majority of home users , you want a card that can do RAID 0 and 1.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Running Linux Mint 17, 16GB DDR2 Ram Core2 Quad ...
*by M***B on 27 November 2015*

Running Linux Mint 17, 16GB DDR2 Ram Core2 Quad. I Used this to replace a SATA 2 card which I had bought 3 years ago. I plugged it in, connected my drives, leaving the boot drive and BD Burner on the motherboard and switched on. It just worked. No messages, no installing drivers, no anything. Just the 4 x 3T drives sitting there ready to be accessed. I tried a copying 1TB data from one drive to another. A mixture of large >10GB files and small files 20KB-100MB. A total of 4000+ files. All went accros in 5 to 6 minutes as opposed to the 20+ minutes with the old card. Not the fastest of SATA 3 cards, but the speed/cost ratio means I give it 4 stars. But only because I've just been using it for 2 months and so have no idea about long term reliability.
