Then rake over once sown. I have found that the looser the soil the better the germination. I'm wary of fertiliser on new grass in case the fertiliser is to potent. The main thing is to keep the newly seeded area moist. Sowing new grass in October is risky best times to sow are when the risk of ground frost has gone. PS I'm not a gardener :-) **Q: What are the instructions please on how to use** A: Rake away any old grass and Moss then give the ground a good water, then sprinkle generously with the seed, then cover with a thin layer of fine compost such as John innes no.2... it is good as it is sandy and won't clump. Another quick water and you're done. Keep watering over the next few weeks, don't over water, just keep ground moist. Once grass sprouts, let it grow to about 3 inches then cut on highest setting to take the tips. Continue to do this to encourage growth from the base... do not cut too short as the roots are young and plant won't recover. **Q: How do you plant the seeds the best to grow the best to avoid the birds the best** A: I cleared the ground with a hoe, spread a minimum of 1 inch of new top soil, trampled the soil down evenly. Marked the first 5 square metres soil into 1 metre squares with bamboo canes. Spread the seeds as per the instructions.. Moved the canes to the next 5 square metres and continued spreading the seeds. When completed, I raked the seeds gently and spread more new top soil. I hammered in canes every few feet and tied strings across to discourage the birds. In spite of that, some of our feathered friends settled for a meal. Even tying bright polythene "flags" and tin foil did not deter them. I guess they fed on 30 to 40 % of the seeds. Each day I sprayed water gently over the area. After 3 weeks when the seeds started to germinate, I could see areas that were sparse, either where I did not spread the seeds evenly or where the birds had feasted most. In those areas, I spread the rest of the seeds left in the sack. Good growth after about 2 months. Walked gently on the new grass every 3 to 4 days and pulled out the weeds that were popping up. The ground being softish helped bring up the weed roots. Hope that helps. **Q: Hello, what is a sowing rate for this seed? How many square meters will a 5kg bag cover? The germination was excellent and has grown thickly over autumn/winter. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Grass at a great price *by J***S on 5 May 2016* I bought this to over seed my lawn as it had some bald patches after a wet winter. I decided to get a much bigger bag than I needed so I can go a little heavy on the seed. The first mistake I made was to just throw the seed down and hope that it grew. However I hadn't taken into consideration the fact that birds just ate most of the seed and my cats are useless at chasing them away. After a lot of reading I ended up getting a whole load of topsoil to then do it properly by laying down seeds then topsoil and some more seed. I have kept it moist and followed all the great advice I read up on and it is just starting to show the fruits of my labour. If you are using top soil try to apply a fair amount across the garden rather than just the patches as otherwise you could end up with really rich green grass in the areas you have treated and a lesser appealing area where you haven't top dressed it. There are plenty of videos showing you how to do this with equipment that you are likely to have in your shed There are a few things to consider with any grass seed. Grass needs temperatures of about 10 degrees plus to germinate so the cold spell we have had up until this week has meant that my grass has taken nearly 4 weeks to show. Normally grass should only taken a week or two to start showing. My only gripe which isn't a big deal but on a 5kg bag I weighed it in at 4.7kg which is why I have deducted a star.
