Can I scrape some crumbs off for my fish tank?** A: I bought a packet of these to help reduce Nitrate levels it in a 250l tropical aquarium and use a set of calibrated scientific mini scales to measure out the correct dose. Our hard-water tap-water already reads a min of 40ppm NO3, and I decided continuing to make my own RO at home was no longer viable due to now being on a water meter and the huge amount to excess ‘waste’ water created for each litre of RO produced; even if you collect the RO waste water for other uses, it’s a time consuming process. I breed Blue Eyed Lemon Longfin Bristlenose plecos and have a couple of Snowball plecos so these fish need extra (daily) gravel cleaning and more frequent water changes due to being particularly dirty little critters! Therefore, I looked at using an off-the-shelf product to help control nitrate and phosphate levels. I added double the recommended amount of this Envii Nitrate Clear, followed by the recommended dose amount thereafter, with no ill effect to my stock. So for my tropical aquarium stock (plecos and guppies), kept at 23°C, pH 7.8, and using an external Fluval 403 filter, it was perfectly safe in terms of not negatively impacting them. Results: I can’t honestly say if this product made much of an impact on reducing aquarium nitrate levels to any appreciable degree over and above those I’d see just from regular water changes using my 40ppm NO3 tap-water; even after repeated treatments sufficient to establish nitrate consuming bacteria in my filter if it were going to. I’m now using the product NoPO2 (at 3g/day) which does seem to be impacting NO2 levels more but is, typically, a far more expensive option for the long term. Short of moving house to a better ‘fish friendly’ less hard, lower NO3 tap-water area, I guess I’ll keep looking for that affordable long term product to help keep my aquarium inhabitants as happy and healthy as they can be. **Q: Can this be use in a marine tank** A: 1 tablet treats 2,000 litres and will work in salt water **Q: Do you have to turn off the UV light?** A: It is best practice to turn off the UV light IF possible, but if not it is more important to keep the pump and filter running.
