It is soil mixed with gravel and all the soil is dry and will float on the surface and cloud the water like mud.... It is for use when setting up only. **Q: Do u have to have a layer of sand or gravel on top of it** A: Yes. Sand or gravel will be needed to hold substrate. **Q: i have a 2 foot by 1 foot tank 54 litres what depth will this tub give me** A: I used this size tub plus the smaller one in my 3ft x 1ft tank. It gave approx. 1cm coverage. I wouldn't suggest using it on it's own as it is a compost-like substance and it will break up and float around in the tank. I put this in first then a layer of white sand followed by a layer of white gravel. It is very good for growing plants, and most importantly my fish are thriving, to the point where I have to make regular donations of baby guppies to the local petshop to avoid the tank becoming overcrowded.I also have to trim the plants (quite severely) every couple of weeks. My personal suggestion would be to use the smaller tub in combination with either sand and/or gravel in a 2ft tank. Very positive fact that it doesn't need cleaning prior to use. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good *by B***A on 10 December 2024* Very good substrat, but you have to wash first, as my one comes very dusty, but still recommended. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Undecided *by K***S on 9 May 2019* The tub was too big for my needs - a shame you couldn't buy it in smaller tubs. The product appears to be of good quality and looks a bit like fine gravel. My aquarium plants are in pots so I put the product at the bottom then topped off with gravel. The majority of this product sinks in water, however there are fibrous bits that do float. If you have fish that dig, I gather you would have a messy water surface. Having the name "complete substrate", I thought the product would give my plants all the nutrients they need, however the instructions state that a fertiliser should be used monthly too.
