## Description

From the manufacturer Understanding your Cat’s Food Allergy Food allergies can be frustrating but the good news is that truly hypoallergenic diets are available to help diagnose and manage this condition. What is Food Allergy? A food allergy is an over-reaction of the immune system against proteins in the food that would normally be considered harmless. This may be caused by abnormalities in the intestinal tract allowing the immune system to be exposed to proteins that are normally not absorbed across the intestine. In contrast, food intolerance does not involve the immune system - an example is lactose intolerance in cats (they can lack the enzyme to digest lactose, the sugar in milk). Although the mechanisms are different, food allergy and intolerance can be difficult to tell apart and their dietary management is very similar. The most common signs of food allergy are either an itchy skin or gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhoea (or both). Many other conditions can cause these signs so your vet may need to carry out various investigations to rule out other conditions. Diet is Important. The reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is to feed an elimination diet such as Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic. If your cat has a food allergy then the signs should disappear when fed the elimination diet (and return when your cat goes back onto its original food). Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic is a truly hypoallergenic diet – it contains selected proteins that have been treated (hydrolysed) to break them down into tiny fragments that are highly unlikely to provoke an immune response. Once food allergy is confirmed you may chose to either find a diet which avoids the specific protein source that your cat is allergic to (if this has been identified) or continue feeding a hydrolysed diet such as Feline HA St/Ox Hypoallergenic. Tips Any protein-containing ingredient could be the cause of food allergy. When carrying out a food trial, ensure your cat eats only the elimination diet and drinks only water. No treats. A food trial may last for up to 12 weeks, although a response is usually seen within three to six weeks. Single Hydrolysed Protein Broken down into tiny components, too small to cause any immune reaction. Purified Carbohydrate To reduce the risk of an allergic reaction occurring. High Palatability Achieved through high-quality ingredients and hydrolysed feline palatability booster. Urinary Security With St/Ox to help support urinary health in cats which may be susceptible to urinary conditions. Review: Excellent food - I have 2 cats that have allergies since coming off kitten food. Since there are only a few brands out there that do hydrolized food which my cats needs rather than just hypoallergenic food, this food is both hypoallergenic and hydrolysed. One cat loves this food and does really well on it, the other prefers Hills zd. If you can get this food on offer it's excellent value and lasts a long time. Most places sell for around £32-£36, if you get on offer you can often get for around £26 on desertcart. I stock up when it's on offer.
Review: Amazing and Great value for money. - This has definitely been one of the better dry foods I have ever seen. I have been bring up cats for 30 years going on and my little one just had 3 kittens and I have never in my life seen such good results. If I had to pick one other it would be royal canin kitten but tried this on the advice of my vet and my cats don't even eat there wet food now and had them on iams and hills. People say its not good for there kidneys as they get older to have them on a dry diet but that hasn't actually been proven and its more down to dehydration over a long period of time. every vet will tell u something different. Some vets recommend a dry diet were as some encourage both as some cats struggle to take in the rite amounts of water so that's the only reason there kidneys can be troubled if they are dehydrated over a long period of time. Again if u read up on it properly there is no proven fact that dry food on its own causes liver failure so people that put that comment up have probably been told by there vet and not looked in to it more. if u ask a different vet they tell u something else. I tend to listen to my vets they pretty much go through everything with u in detail but a dry food diet is perfectly fine as long as u have enough water for your little one. Not so much have the water out but u need to make sure they are taking the correct amount in and u don't want them over drinking either so that's why it is a bit tricky but if u do it correct it's actually more beneficial. Also just a quick heads up on the wheat subject, Its all nonsense cats have been living outdoors before we started having them as pets and they can only have issues with wheat if they have allergies but apart from that it can actually be very beneficial for your little one so 2 very important things that people always tell u to stay away from when in reality there is a bit of truth behind but for the most part wheat and dry food for your little one is perfectly fine. Just make sure u have a complete dry food as some of the dry foods out there are don't have the required nutrients that a cat will need for there day to day life. Not saying I'm an expert by any means but I've done a lot of research on the advice of my vet and everything he tells me is pretty much spot on. If in doubt just speak to your vet and don't listen to comments.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this product has Hydrolyzed proteins and single carbohydrate sources?**
A: I dont know but I bought the urinary one. My cat had eaten it from other places as advised by the vet and was fine on it liked it. The one I bought from amazon of the same brand etc as usual gave my cat diarrhea and alot of blood in stools, it made him really poorly and he then refused to eat any more. I would advise you do not buy pro plan vetinary diet food from amazon!! I don't know what was done to it or where they got it from but my cat nearly died from eating the one I got from amazon.

**Q: Most people commenting here feel that purina ha helped cope with their cats skin allergies. do people fed their cat exclusively on this dry food ?**
A: My 8 year old Ragdoll cat, Alfie, has had the incurable inflammatory bowel disease (the symptoms being vomiting and diarrhoea) for a few years and nowadays gets along very well with a prednisolone steroid injection and a vitamin B12 injection every 6 weeks. It was Alfie's vet who recommended this product and Alfie loves it. Since feeding this hypoallergenic product to him, he has had a remarkable improvement. Alfie choses to eat this product (he seems to love it), and refuses to eat most other things although now and then he will be tempted with chicken and on rare occasions I will give him a little tuna. I believe that this product has made all the difference to Alfie, his quality of life. His coat is not as thick as it once was but we think that is down to the steroids. You have to weigh up the pros and cons.

**Q: Does it really take 1- 2 months to dispatch? Why so long?**
A: I received my last order within 24 hours. I have Amazon prime. But when a shortage early 2020 it took about 30 days for supplier to get stock.

**Q: Is this product considered grain-free and gluten-free?**
A: I believe so... my cat’s vet recommended her eating it because she had a food allergy and we weren’t sure what allergy she had. The vet said she should eat this food 6 weeks straight with no other treats or food then if you think the cat is allergic to something add that one thing back into their diet along side this food to see how they react then have a 6 week break with only this food.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reduces overgrooming/itchiness - cat had no issue with the swap
*by D***A on 30 January 2026*

Third time buying this product. My cat absolutely loves it. I've noticed a significant drop in his grooming/itching after the initial transition period of 4-6weeks, so I'd highly recommend it. My cat hasn't experienced any bowel issues, diarrhoea or vomiting since he's been on this type of dry food. He had looser stools in the first couple of days, but was completely fine afterwards.
