Review: Excellent treatment for oak kitchen work surfaces - We have home made kiln dried oak worksurfaces in our kitchen and have always used this tung nut oil to seal them. Tung nut oil has many advantages over other oils - it is food safe, water repellent, it dries, it is heat resistant and lasts a long time. It gives a beautiful mellow colour to wood and provide a nice, non-glassy shine. I have read somewhere that it should be re-applied every 6 to 12 months, but in our experience it is not necessary this often. The majority of our surfaces have not needed any retreatement since last done 4 years ago. The only exceptions are the wooden draining board which is often wet, and the occasional place where someone has put done something which left a mark. So we usually just re-sand the affected parts and recoat them in oil. The rest is good for years. A couple of points worth remembering : 1) If you have an area which gets wet regularly (around sink), always dry it after you have finished your washing up - this will greatly extend the life span of the oiled surface. 2) Never, and I mean never leave dishwasher powder on the surface with brushing it off immediately. Why** A: Perhaps it's sitting too thick on the surface of the wood did you dilute it with citrus terpene for the first couple of coats this is preferred and has a lovely orange oil smell which counteracts the natural tung oil smell which I find is similar in odour to sesame oil. Alternatively if you want a quick remedy wipe it down with a suitable solvent to remove the top layer of tung oil ando onice completely dry give it a coat of liberon finishing oil which cures to an odourless finish and is Matt to gloss depending on how many coats you give it. **Q: Would you suggest using grain filler on an oak table top before or after using this product?** A: Sorry, don't know for sure. I would expect you would fill any gaps before oiling, as stuff doesn't stick to oily things. I sanded down some old, aged oak for a shelf to go above our wood burner. It really did transform the appearance, it made the grain and features in the wood really stand out. It slightly darkened the wood, but not by much. Hope someone can give you a better answer. **Q: Can anyone tell me what the spout on the bottle looks like and how easy it is to pour?** A: It is a tin not a bottle and has a normal pour spout.
