    Top Level Andre Rieu Program

Concert Master and showman Andre Rieu offers a meticulously thought out program and visual production in his '100 Years of Strauss' DVD.  The program showcases the range of Strauss' compositions: not only waltzes but a Mazurka and a Polka and a Gallop, among other types of offering.  The music and photography bring out the swirling giddiness of 'On the Blue Danube' Waltz, the tenderness and melancholy of his compositions from 'The Gypsy Baron' and  the classic Hungarian style of 'Eljen A Magyar.'This DVD shows a young and very handsome Andre Rieu on the concert stage in Vienna(!).  As usual, he has a full concert orchestra with him and they are beautifully attired--the women in wonderful gowns in a variety of pastel colors and cuts; the men elegant in formal white tie and tailcoats.  Aside from a very good level of musicianship, the orchestra members demonstrate a love of the music and an engagement with the audience and with each other as the perform.  What better way to capture the potential color and elegance and joy that could be a concert hall experience.  The whole aim of Andre Rieu seems to be to keep the 'life' in the genre of orchestral music, to avoid stuffiness and to keep the essence of this music before the public.The DVD even includes Rieu enjoying Vienna and its environs--moving the music out of the concert hall by showing the world that inspired it.  This part of the photography really enhances the viewing experience.Sound is fine on this production.  Andre's comments are delivered in some of his best English and are less stilted than sometimes, as well as being decently witty and usefully informative.
