April Dawn Camellia Camellia japonica 'april dawn' ‘April Dawn’ is a Japanese camellia in the April Series introduced by Dr. Clifford Parks. It should be sited in areas where winter temperatures are unlikely to dip below zero degrees F. This is an evergreen shrub that typically grows over time to 5-8’ tall and to 4’ wide with elliptic to obovate, serrate, glossy dark green leaves (to 3” long). Fragrant, pink and white, formal double flowers (each to 3-4” diameter) have darker pink streaking. Bloom occurs in early spring (April), thus giving rise to the name April Series. ‘April Dawn’ came from a cross between C. japonica ‘Berenice Boddy’ and C. japonica ‘Herme’. ‘April Dawn’ has unusually good winter hardiness. It is part of the April Series (cultivars developed for improved winter hardiness), and is now one of the few cultivars of C. japonica currently recommended for growing outdoors year round in USDA Zone 6 Mature Height : 5-8 feet Mature Width : 3-4 feet Exposure : Full to partial shade Hardiness Zones : 6-10

Review: Beware - Unfortunately the 3 Camellias I ordered did not survive. The plants were too small and fragile upon arrival. I did my best to try and keep them alive, but there was no way these fragile clippings were going to make it. VERY disappointed. I was pleased at the condition my 6 plants arrived in. The root ball was intact and with each plant the end roots were very easy to separate and spread out on the appropriate soil. We have drip irrigation and they all seem to be adapting well and growing as I expected. I will buy from this supplier again.
