They are sturdy and yes you could use as a sandpit **Q: Would this be any good for a hamster to run around in without getting out** A: I think a determined hamster could get out of this if left unsupervised. **Q: Could this be used as a large tray? Or would it flex with weight in?** A: I use it a lot in the garden to carry plants and soil. It does flex I'm not sure it would double up as a tray. It's also quite deep. I'm not sure why you wouldn't just buy a tray **Q: Would this work for a sand pit for my 2 year old** A: Yes it would be good for a sand pit.
