Review: Simple, inexpensive battery replacement - APC powerchute fail though! - Two reviews here - most recent purchase was for a replacement to APC ES550G backup UPS. The battery is a snug replacement for the original, and takes a couple of minutes to fit. I noticed on reboot that my NAS (a QNAP) showed remaining time on the UPS as less than one minute even with a full 100% charge showing! The battery is likely fine, just the calibration. Same result when I installed Powerchute (Windows 7). Quick research shows a common problem - you have two solutions, and maybe have to do both. Step 1 - Recalibrate battery: basically, shutdown everything. Unplug devices from battery. Leave to charge to 100% (usually 8-24 hours) with no load. Unplug UPS from wall. It should now only power via the battery. Apply a load that doesn't mind suddenly losing power (lamps, monitors, printers). Wait for UPS to die completely. Unplug everything. Plug back into wall. Wait to recharge completely. Plug PC and NAS back in and look at UPS settings. You should have 30-40 mins of charge depending on the draw you applied. This didn't work for me... so I had to do step 2: Step 2 (optional): The latest (as of now) powerchute version 3.X has removed a key feature - resetting the battery replacement date. You have to get hold of a version 2.X of powerchute - its not on their website but can be found on their FTP server ftp.apc.com under /apc/public/software/windows/xp/pcpe/200 - you'll need to login anonymous. Although this says for XP, it worked on W7 64 bit - I just set the "compatibility" under properties of the file, to XP. Install software. Plug in the USB cable to your laptop/PC. Start software, and assuming it still says <1 minute power left, go to the Configuration, Options and you should see a battery icon next to "APC recommends ..." - click the battery icon to reset the stats. Then restart Powerchute (maybe reboot instead) and it should then show the correct runtime duration. Hopefully this helps someone else - why they removed this useful option, I don't know... Alarm Battery Bought this to replace the defunct house alarm battery on my Menvier TS590. It took all of 5 mins to replace. Taking the alarm panel off caused a "tamper" fault, but once the battery was replaced, panel put back, all I did was re-enter the main code and hit ENT, and it reset that fault too. Call out would have been £145.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Would this battery be suitable for driving robot motors, that would be charged frequently?**
A: It will work for 12V applications but if your use is for repeated discharge/recharge cycles then a dedicated cyclic battery will give a longer life as the internal construction is intended for this. The slightly larger 10AH version that we sell from the same manufacturer - Yuasa REC10-12 - is designed for cyclic use and will last longer, with quite similar dimensions.

**Q: Would this battery be suitable for use with electric fencing**
A: Hi.Any lead acid battery is suitable for use with electric fencing, its the capacity of the battery (ah rating) that is important, also some electric fencing units have specific sized batteries to suit the size of fence and wattage of transformer. Do you have the details off your old battery or what fence unit you have?RegardsMartin

**Q: Would this battery be able to charge a laptop? the laptop need 12vd.c 3.42a 65w? i also intend to charge the battery with a 60 w solar panel.**
A: Calum. I would not use this type of battery with a laptop, it could do some significant damage. Use the correct transformed charger supplied with the product, to ensure the correct inputs into the laptop battery.

**Q: Hi, can I place this battery sideways what I mean the top part would be on the side instead of upright. Many thanks**
A: As this battery is sealed and airtight, there shouldn't be any issues.
