## Description

Flowers by Rosie Sanders is a large-format book that showcases over 80 of her finest flower paintings in exquisite detail. Often compared to the artist Georgia O'Keeffe, Rosie Sanders's botanical paintings lie at the extreme end of botanical art – they exude dynamism and sensuality in every brushstroke and their richness of colour sets her apart from her contemporaries. In this beautifully illustrated book, Rosie exhibits a selection of flowers, from tulips to orchids, roses to irises, anemones to amaryllis, and illuminates them with fascinating and skillful uses of perspective and light. This large-format book showcases her finest paintings in exquisite detail and they are accompanied by excellent and accessible scientific commentary. Also included is an introduction by renowned Swiss botanist Dr. Andreas Honegger. This book is perfect for artists want to get a closer look at a master's brushstrokes, textures and colour in paintings, or readers who are interested in contemporary botanical art. Chapters include: 1. Diversity in the Garden 2. Dark Flowers: the Magic of Night 3. A Fascination of Orchids 4. Lilies in Spring 5. Varieties of Belladonna 6. In Search of the Black Iris.

Review: Flowers fabulous but a little let down by the words - It's really refreshing and rewarding to get a book which conveys the impact of Rosie's very large paintings in the same way as happens when you walk into a gallery and see her paintings for the very first time. My one criticism of the book is that I'd have much preferred to have heard Rosie's words describing what appealed about her subject for each painting, her thinking behind her approach and what she was trying to achieve. Written as a commentary in the third person by Dr Andreas Honegger - and also translated from German (this book was first published in Germany) - creates a bit of a disconnect between paintings and words. I also really don't like it when people guess what an artist was trying to achieve when they could actually interview the artist and ask them! Rosie is far from inarticulate. I'm sure there could have been a better way of creating text to go with the paintings (e.g. an interview - with a clearer distinction between who asked the questions and the artist providing the answer?) Finally - there's a bonus of a print of one of her paintings included at the end slipped in under the book cover.
Review: Stunning! - I can understand why the work of Rosie Sanders is compared to that of Georgia O’Keefe. However, despite the fact that I am not an art critic, I feel that her work is far superior to O’Keefe’s. For one thing, there is a great deal more of it judging by the book(s). For another, she paints in water colour - such a difficult medium and worked so beautifully. Almost every fabulously printed page had me gasping in awe. I have to admit that I would love to be able to paint like this and would give my eye teeth to watch this lady painting for a couple of days. Never mind. I have this fantastic book to copy and learn from. By far the best book I have on flower painting. Well worth the price.
