The foam is the right thickness/firmness for a baby (according to the SIDS guidelines). But the cover is a really cheap, horrible fabric. There is still pen marks on mine from where they measured to cut it. Definitely would suggest washing the cover and letting the foam get some good airing out before use, as it does have that horrible chemical smell. I saved the washable cover from the snuzpod and put it on this mattress.
