The motor requires so little power it can be driven by a usb cord attached to a wall adapter. Consequently, water pressure is just enough to cycle the water through the spout. Care should be taken to minimize the chances of debris falling into the tray, just as with a regular water dish. The opening for water to drain from is narrow and will stop debris from getting to the motor housing but may clog and cause the tray to overflow. If only one small adult animal is drinking from this fountain, refills will be infrequent. Refills will increase with temperature, size of the animal, lack of water in the air, number of animals, and spills. Works great with the Rellaty cat water fountain. These catch all the gunk that goes through the fountain, but they should be replaced every ~2 weeks on average. They can get pretty gross
