There is a small "stop" at the base of each microphone adapter. With just the microphone adapter in place and no microphone, it's very soft even close to your ear. 1. Insert the microphone to the point that it stops 2. Turn on the calibrator to the required level, 94 dB is the more common 3. Set the meter to "A" weighting 3. Adjust your meter as appropriate 4. Repeat for the second level and with both "A" and "C" weighting if the meter has both.
