## Description

Product Description Why Should You Reproof Your Wax Garments? Wax garments can prove extremely waterproof, rugged and durable. However after many outings, repeated use of waxed clothing can leave it looking worn. Reproofing can restore it to almost new condition - improving it's longevity and waterproof capabilities. Best of all it's easier than you'd think! How to Reproof Your Waxed Garments 1. Cleaning Accumulated Dirt, Debris, or Residues Collect needed cleaning items: cold water and a sponge or soft cloth. Bring the garment to room temperature if stored in a colder area. Find a sturdy work surface (such as a table) and place a plastic sheet or table cloth over it for protection. Lay the jacket or trousers flat on the work surface. If it's a hat, just place it upright on the surface. Dip the sponge or cloth in cold water, squeeze out excess, and gently wipe down the garment. Go over the entire surface area to give a quick rinse, removing any dirt, debris, or residues trapped in the fabric. Particularly pay attention to get into any seams, creases, and areas of most wear and tear. 2. Applying Fresh Wax to Reproof Prepare wax that comes in a tin container, by placing the tin in a bowl or basin of warm water. Water needs to be hot enough to melt and soften the inner contents into a smooth wax. Use a clean, sturdy work surface, covered with any needed protective plastic or tablecloth, and preferably in a well-ventilated area. Place the cleaned jacket or trousers flat and spread out on the work surface. Dip the sponge or soft cloth in the melted wax and work an even layer over the garment surface to provide a coat. Pay close attention to any seams and creases, worn-out areas, or areas that are drier. Make sure to cover the entire jacket or trousers and be careful not to apply wax over regular cloth surfaces, including the insides of pockets, any lining material, or corduroy used for collars, elbows, knees, and cuffs. Hang your garment in a warm place to dry thoroughly overnight. Bonus tips: 1) Do not use the treated garment immediately to avoid spreading moist wax onto contact surfaces. 2) Use a hair-dryer in a low-heat setting and run over the newly waxed or reproofed garment to help speed up the drying process and settle the wax into an even coverage. Review: Excellent product. - Excellent value and quality product. 500 ml in for slightly more than the Barbour 200 ml version. I opened the lid fully then rested it back on the tin before placing it in a bowl of boiling water. I do this to avoid pressure building in the tin from the warm wax, but put lid resting on tin to keep the heat in. I filled the bowl to about 2 inches below top of tin. Wax melted nicely after about five minutes. I placed my 25 year old Northumbria jacket on an Ironing board with brown paper under the jacket otherwise the Mrs would go ballistic ! After wiping any dirt off the jacket I started rubbing the wax into the jacket paying extra attention to the seams on the shoulders . Waxing the back of the jacket was easier to wax than the front due to the pockets needing a thorough going over . The wax itself looks identical to the Barbour version and is easy to apply. The results are amazing and have made my old jacket like new . I had to change the water in the bowl once while I applied the wax as I took some time to cover the jacket . I did put too much wax on the front of the jacket as I was getting over confident. However a few walks out in spring sun and a little rain soon solved that problem. Although there is no comparison to the Barbour wax jacket , and I absolutely love my Northumbria , the Walker and Hawkes wax seems just as good as the Barbour version and looks and feels the same .
Review: Easy to apply and works well. - Ordered the 500mL size. Was able to wax my jacket with two coats (pun intended) and still had approximately half the tin remaining. I think it worked out very well! Living in the UK in a cold house meant I wasn’t able to do exactly as recommended by Barbour but below is what I did. I put the tin into a pot of boiling water and let the wax fully melt. Be sure the level of the water is below the level of wax this way it won’t tip over. This can take 10-20 mins to fully melt in a boiling pot. I used a sponge to apply the wax. I submersed the sponge into the wax and let it drain the excess then I was able to apply the wax very easily and liberally across the coat, using long strokes and ensuring full coverage. I would avoid dipping the sponge then applying immediately as this causes big wet patches that soaks through quickly and is harder to spread. I then used a hairdryer to melt the wax on the surface to allow the wax to soak into the cotton threads of the coat, you will see the glazey wax go shiny as it melts into the fabric. I also used bunched up paper towels/kitchen roll and brushed across the surface to spread the wax as it melts in - this is really helpful to get rid of saturated patches. Hope this helps anyone trying it out. It’s really worth it and can give an old coat a new life.
