Looked exclusively at cordless ones with mixed reviews, all were over £100 with chain speeds of around 5 cm. Came across this mains powered one from Black & Decker with an 11cm speed, 10 inch blade and 2.7 metre reach for £100 and thought I'd give it a go. It's a great tool, works brilliantly. No issues with the chain coming off as some reviews say, easy to set up and tension. You do have to check the tension every so often but I managed a good hour using it with only one adjustment needed. It is quite heavy at its longest reach but still perfectly manageable with care. Cut limbs of 8 inches and more with relative ease, saved me at least 500 notes if I'd had to employ a tree surgeon. Very pleased with this tool, excellent value for money. Review: Good once you’ve “built” it - Wasn’t happy about having to attach the chain saw bit on the pole. Also you definitely need oil to oil the chain and fill the oil font ( glad I had read other reviews). Instructions were actually useless re attaching the chain bit. Come on Black & Decker. Had to google it and found Fred in the Shed on YouTube (thanks Fred you lifesaver!). Once built you need to take your time and get used to it. Quite heavy at top end when pole extended. Think probably need to buy some PPE like safety goggles. Didn’t appreciate the chippings etc that would fly off. Also doesn’t fit back in box once chain attached so make sure you have space to store. It’s approx 6ft in length. I use mine to cut back some Bay and Holly trees that overhang from my neighbours gardens and the maximum thickness of branch I have cut is about 3cm. The machine is quite top heavy (all the weight is concentrated in the cutting head) so I would only consider such a machine if you are confident you can manage the weight. **Q: Can this item be used on a thick hedge** A: From my limited experience it tears at smaller branches/twigs rather than cut them. When you are up to 20 to 30 MM. it works really well. If you are wanting to trim a thick hedge I would use a good hedge cutter which will take branches of 10 MM diameter without problem. **Q: How long is the cord?** A: Just measured mine, it is approx 12 foot long **Q: Can i take the pole if and use as a normal chainsaw?** A: No- because the power trigger is at one end of the pole and the saw at the other. To be honest you shouldn't need to do this. Makes cutting high branches very easy. The instructions could be clearer, but they are reasonable to follow. The saw feels solid and is not too heavy, obviously at full extension, it takes a bit of strength to hold. I have used it from the ground & from a ladder with no problems. The safety cut offs give peace of mind. Helmet & glasses/ visor required if working above head as lots of twigs etc come down. The saw can be used on hedges, but gives quite a rough cut & a lot of debris collects on saw blade. No oil is included in box, but is easy to buy in diy shops.
