I wondered if it would have that "new" smell, almost that dyed smell that makes you want to wash an item that smells like that before you use it, but it, in fact, did not! My senior 5-pound Malti-Poo tends to get cold easily, and this was the perfect thing for her to curl up in and take a long nap! And since she is 15 years old, she doesn't always completely finish urinating before she begins to walk away, which means a good bit ends up on the end of her tail or her back paws, so I needed a bed that had a removable cover and was washable. I washed the cover and the pillow that they actually lay on in the gentlest cycle on cold water and laid it out to dry. It washed wonderfully! I was so pleased with this item UNTIL I had to put the cover back on, which is why this product does not get 5 stars from me. After the 15 minutes I spent trying to figure out how the foam actually fits into the cover and how to line up the zipper, which one part is on the actual velour material and the other is on the the bottom where the pillow goes, I fought for another 15 minutes trying to line up the shorter part of the foam with the construction of the cover and finally had to call my son, the future mechanical engineer, in to figure it out since that is the type of skill it takes to get that stinking cover back on! The individual(s) who designed the cover of this bed must: (a) not be a pet owner, (b) not be a mother of three as well as a pet owner, (c) must not be a mother of three as well as a pet owner as well as have full-time employment because what mother of three and pet owner with a full-time job has time to fight to put a cover designed like that back on???? Overall, I am very satisfied with the quality of the material and the comfort it seems to afford my old lady Malti-Poo.
