Oftentimes, to "personalize" covers like this, I will cover it using a piece of decorative paper or simple craft paper so I can create my own cover. **Q: is the spiral bound on the top or the side** A: The spiral binding is on the 11-inch side for the 8.5 in. x 11 in. size, and on the 8.5-inch side on the smaller 5.5 in. x 8.5 in. size. **Q: How smooth/toothy are the pages?** A: Very small tooth, but not enough to feather ink much. Not copy paper smooth though. I use a felt calligraphy pen that takes a moment to bleed any deep ink onto the page, so I only get a bit of feathering if I hold it down or the tooth will only catch wisps if I slash at the page (catching the crests of the fine tooth). My fountain pen feathers like crazy though, and bleeds a bit. **Q: How does this hold up with ink? I like to go over my sketches with prismacolor pens.** A: I only use pencil. What I love about this book is I can erase, erase and erase and it still holds up. It seems to accept gel pens when I make notations.
