If I take into account substrate, rocks and empty space there’s probably around 280 litres of water. I’ve read about people whose heaters have cooked their fish, so I have it connected to an Inkbird ITC-306A dual probe temperature controller which will stop that from happening. It is connected to a Fluval FX4 which was a nightmare to connect as the heater has 16mm connectors and the FX4 has 25mm connectors. With a selection of Y connectors, reducers and Jubilee clips, I was able to split the 25mm return tube into a 16mm for the heater and a 20mm bypass so as not to interfere with the flow/pressure and back to a single 25mm return. Just turn it off about 10 minutes before maintenance on the filter as there won’t be any water passing over the element and you don’t want it to overheat. **Q: Can the 300 watt be used with the fluval 406 (ie. is the tube measurements compatible)** A: Yes fits 16/ 22 mm hope this helps ..also this is a very good heater.aquarium temps allways stable. **Q: What happens if the external pump stops working and no water flows throught the heater. Will this heater overheat?** A: Yes but should shutoff when the water in the pipe reaches the thermostat temp. I wouldn't recommend these as the thermostat failed in the on position on mine.
