Unless your Internet service is dial-up (not fibre optic broadband) you don't connect the hub/router to your land line . I'm signed up for a TV/broadband/landline package with my ISP but have had intermittent problems with my landline due to condensation tarnishing contacts - the ingress point isn't watertight - and I agreed to change my service from landline to VOIP, in which incoming and outgoing calls are made through the hub/router . In practical terms, nothing really changes except you plug into the router instead of the wall socket - and if the router is turned off or goes offline the phone service goes down too - not so much of a problem as nearly everybody has a mobile phone . I plugged this splitter into my router and then connected my existing phone to one port and a fax machine to the other - literally plug-and-play .
