**Q: What i think i am seeing in the picture is two different converters.  is one a straight through gender changer & the other a null modem configuration?**
A: Both of them are standard null modem adapters

A: not sure your application, this is an RS232 signal swap adapter.
Here is pinout: pin-1 goes to pin-4, 
pin-2 to pin-3, 
pin-5 to pin-5, 
pin-7 to pin-8, and 
pins-6&9 are not connected.

A: No on one on each cable

Because serial is not exactly current technology it can be difficult to tell both what type of cable you need and what type of cable you are buying. Sellers don't know the difference and even if things are properly labeled the terminology and jargon might as well be hieroglyphics at this point. After purchasing the wrong ones, and buying the "right ones" but receiving completely different mislabeled cables, this item allowed me to get my DB9 - DB25 Epson Thermal Printers working. I still don't know exactly which cables I purchased or which I needed, but these fixed the issue regardless.
