## Overview

The Korg MONOTRON-DUO is a compact, battery-powered analog synthesizer featuring dual oscillators with independent tuning, a ribbon controller keyboard with selectable scales, and the classic MS-10/MS-20 analog filter. Its built-in speaker and aux input enable on-the-go sound creation and processing of external audio sources, making it a versatile tool for both melodic play and experimental sound design.

## Description

From the manufacturer Go Anywhere Analog That was the theme behind the remarkable battery-powered and palm-sized analogue synthesiser that Korg dubbed the monotron. Now the powerful and fun-to-play monotron is joined by two new siblings. Each is played from a ribbon controller keyboard with newly added features. Dual Oscillator / X-Mod Design Enhanced Ribbon Controller Keyboard The monotron DUO's ribbon controller keyboard now features the familiar Scale function used on the KAOSSILATOR. You can use this button to select one of four scales: Chromatic, Major, Minor, or Off. Choose the Chromatic scale to play precise pitches as on a piano, or choose Major or Minor to generate musically coherent phrases by simply sliding your finger around on the keyboard. monotron DUO & Mono/Poly Offering two oscillators, the monotron DUO adds an extra dimension, delivering an even more extreme sound. Tune the oscillators in unison for a rich, thick, analogue tone. Tune them in intervals for classic soloing sounds and generating new effects. The X-MOD (cross modulation) circuit taken from Korg's classic Mono/Poly can introduce a mild or razor-sharp edge to the overall sound; everything from a rich vibrato to extreme metallic sounds reminiscent of an FM synth. Classic Korg Filtering The distinctive tone of an analog filter (VCF) can dramatically alter and enrich the sound. The monotron DELAY uses the same highly acclaimed VCF circuit as KORG's classic MS-10 and MS-20 semi modular synthesizers. Originally released over 30 years ago, these instruments are still coveted today for their aggressive, dynamic filters. The VCF Cutoff knob sets the frequency or tone of the filter; the VCF Peak knob adds emphasis. A powerful filter is an essential aspect of any analogue synthesizer, applying dramatic tonal changes to the sound, and projecting an intense personality that will stand out in any live performance. Fully-patchable Filter The input jack (AUX input) built into the monotron DELAY’s compact body allow you to place any audio source into the monotron DELAY’s signal path, directly before the analogue filter and delay circuit. This provides a great way to connect a KAOSSILATOR, a guitar, or a digital audio player to the monotron and enjoy tone-bending filter and delay effect A miniature speaker is built into the monotron DELAY. Along with the battery operation and compact size, this feature allows you to enjoy the share the monotron DELAY’s analog synthesis sound with your friends, anywhere, at any time. There's also a headphone output that you can use when practicing in private, creating sounds at home, recording, or for connecting to an amplifier or PA system. Have you met the Volca's ? Review: Soooo Sick - In terms of hardware synths, I have a microKorgXL and a Moog Slim Phatty which I love to pieces and use all the time... However I don't think either of them get as much use as my montron and I think that is purely down to the in built speaker... I have yet to use it in any of my productions and purely play around with it for fun, but I would like to include it in a tune soon. It is sooo much fun for when your chilling and wanna play around with the possibilities of what you can create. I bought this and my housemate loved it so much he went and got the original monotron so we now chain them together and run them through our guitar pedals and kaoss pads to see how far we can push the sounds... if you are a tech head you will know that although sometimes utterly pointless, this experimental process is a lot of fun. Specifically for the duo: I have found that it is definitely the only real monotron designed for playing melodic lines due to its quantizable ribbon keyboard. If you have a chromatic tuner at hand it is very easy to set a key and a scale and get some sweet lines and hooks out of it. The second oscillator is wicked for creating interval based sounds which are reminiscent of retro video game music and electro due to both oscillators being square waveforms. The x-mod on the duo is essentially a frequency modulation effect that routes the output of each oscillator across one another other (hence cross or x mod). The second oscillator can reach inaudible low frequencies and therefor the effect can also be used as an LFO using the square wave of oscillator 2 to modulate the pitch of oscillator one. When turned up to a higher frequency, oscillator 2 modulates the first oscillator to create harmonically rich tones not present in either oscillator creating some interesting distorted and metallic sounds. I am definitely going to buy more monotrons once my next load of pocket money comes in to chain them all together :)
Review: Buy it! - This thing is great fun. Amazing quality and sounds for the money and I love having the built in delay. My almost 3 year old daughter loves it too!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How would I go about hooking this up to a DAW?**
A: If you have a Behringer mixer, you would have to hook this up to your mixer via an analog input- that is, either a channel strip using line-in or a stereo/mono input, or 2-track RCA input.

If you have the Behringer Q302usb mixer, you can chain the Main Outs (red and white RCA jacks) to the monotron by running an RCA to 3.5 mm stereo cable or adapter from the Monotron, then run the headphone out of the monotron back to another RCA input on that same mixer with an identical cable, or to another mixers RCA 2-track in. If you have a different Behringer mixer that has 1/4" jacks, you'll need a cable to go from the Monotron to a 1/4" jack.

Basically you're going to need a cable or adapter to go from the Monotron's 3.5 mm headphone out stereo jack to either another 3.5 mm jack, 1/4" jack, or RCA jacks.

**Q: how can i hear one play before i buy?**
A: Search for "Korg Monotron Duo" on YouTube. Here is Korg's official video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilSWwjuRrhw

**Q: what cord do i need to hook it up too a amp? and also what kind of mic?**
A: It uses a 3.5mm (like a headphone/aux cable for a phone) jack for both input and output. If you want to adapt it to studio gear you'll need 2 converters from that to 1/4". The jacks are pretty close together though, if you're hooking up something like that, it might not fit - and you might be better off using a guitar delay pedal or some other delay intended for 1/4" use.

**Q: Someone stated that this does not have a speaker output. Can anyone suggest an inexpensive synthesizer that does have a speaker connection?**
A: The Korg Duo Monotron does not have an integral speaker, but it does have an output for stereo headphones (1/8" jack) that can also be used for an output controlled by the volume control for a male 1/8" stereo jack connector to a male 1/4" mono jack for input to a standard guitar amplifier (male/male) patch cord. I use a 36" patch cord from the Monotron to the guitar amplifier input. (not mono/mono). There is also an aux jack input (1/8" stereo jack) for connecting a CD or MP3 player. (a 1/8"male/male stereo patch cord is useful for the aux jack input)

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Serious fun instrument
*by K***G on 23 February 2013*

Having had this a few days now I have to admit that after the initial play around I haven't picked it up again. But this is more a reflection on me than the instrument. I did experiment recording it into my DAW and found the result was rather more 'angular' a little rougher, than it sounds through the headphones. I am hoping it was the method I used. Having said all that the instrument itself is of the quality we have come to expect from KORG. A delightful little thing with great potential. For the price you couldn't do better. I haven't yet tried linking it into my other gear but realise the potential that lies there. I heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys playing with synthetic sounds. Its great. Please note this reivew is for the Monotron DELAY.
